The Best of Alex 2009

The credit crunch bites, the global capitalist system teeters on the brink of collapse and bankers find themselves Public Enemy Number One.
.

.

An annus horribilissimus for investment banker Alex Masterley, as the credit crunch bites and the entire capitalist system teeters on the brink of collapse. Bankers suddenly find themselves Public Enemy Number One, held in lower public esteem than even estate agents or politicians.

Alex has to use his wits to survive as the escalating crisis threatens to send the City back to the Dark Ages of banking: no bonuses, iron-fisted regulation and the need to go on working beyond retirement age (which for Alex was supposed to be 35 in any case). Alex’s colleague Clive gets fired (twice) and things become so desperate in the Masterley household that Penny, Alex’s trophy corporate wife, has to get a job.

An insider’s take on the credit crunch as it unfolded on the business pages of The Daily Telegraph.
